Foods and Beverages That May Worsen Joint Pains

Regenerative Injection Therapy is one of the various ways that patients can seek treatment through regenerative medicine. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that has allowed many people to get back on their daily routine faster than traditional treatment such as pain medication or surgery. But just like any other medical procedure, its recovery period also requires some ground rules for patients to follow. To give you a better overview of what these are, here are some of the things you can expect after your therapy.

What Happens After the Therapy?
After the injection you may experience minor discomfort (minimal pain and swelling), which can last around 48 hours. But a patient who comes in with knee pain, would be able to walk out and drive themselves home. We ask patients to not exceed their normal activity level for two full weeks after the procedure.

This is a regenerative procedure and not a simple pain injection. As such, the time for the reduced symptoms usually takes up to 4 – 6 weeks. Continual improvement can occur for up to 9 months – 1 Year, thus providing long term lasting benefits.

Aftercare Procedures
In the initial days after receiving your therapy, patients are recommended to avoid any extensive activities. This is to give way for the cells in your body to focus their healing mechanism on the injured area. The most important thing is to avoid taking any other pain or anti-inflammatory medication unless stated otherwise by your physician.

After two weeks have passed, you will do your first post-procedure rehabilitation session. At that time, you will begin to receive regular communications from the Amarillo Regenerative Medicine Center with exercise recommendations.

You may also start doing some low-impact movements to help your muscles get back in motion. This includes walking, Pilates, yoga, and swimming. Exercises like weight lifting and running are not yet advised, as this may affect the healing process of your muscles and joints. Use your pain as a sign of whether or not you can continue an activity. If you don’t feel pain anymore, you can continue with your routine, but always keep in mind to do everything with caution.

Joint pains refer to the soreness and aching sensation in the knees, elbows, hips, and shoulders. They typically happen because of an injury or severe illness. Common causes include arthritis, tendonitis, lupus, and even cancer. For people suffering from any of these causes, making the right food choices is essential. It’s because some foods trigger inflammation of the joints. To give you a more thorough understanding of what they are, here are some of the foods and beverages people with joint pains should avoid:

Food High in Sugar
Added sugars are among the main culprits behind increased chances of developing joint problems. Examples of foods with added sugars are sodas, cereals, candies, cakes, and other desserts. Some experts have found proteins called anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) in people with rheumatoid arthritis. They believe sugar triggers this element in the patient’s body, which is the reason for the increased soreness of the joints.

Gluten
Gluten is a form of protein found in wheat, spelt, barley, and rye. As such, it is also present in products like pasta, bread, and cereals. Sadly, in some research studies, it has been linked to causing issues in the joints. So, a gluten-free diet is typically recommended by specialists to help people with joint problems avoid pain and swelling.

Processed Food
Processed foods refer to certain kinds of foods that are altered as part of their preparation. And, high levels of refined grains, sodium, and sugar are used to preserve them as part of their packaging. But, some researchers have found that these ingredients may increase the chances of pain in the joints because they are risk factors also linked to obesity. Some examples of processed foods include bacon, microwave popcorn, biscuits, and sausages.

Alcohol
Alcohol also causes joint discomfort because it is high in a chemical called purine. Purine is a compound that, once metabolized, creates uric acid in the body. As this acid continues to build up, it leads to a condition known as gout, which causes painful sharp-like crystals in the joints.
